With only a small spot for me to garden in I had to get creative and go tiny with many small containers and terrariums.
Some of my favorite types of plants to garden with:
Baby Tears(Soleirolia soleirolii) plant gets its name from the tiny, round leaves cascading down slender, fragile stems. Will grow in low light, but prefers bright, indirect light. Keep out of direct sun, which will scorch the leaves. Keep the soil moist at all times. It will not tolerate dry soil. It is a versatile plant and will grow in normal room temperatures 60-75°F/16-24°C. Love's moist air and will spread low to the ground. Could overtake other small plants unless trimmed back. Perfect ground cover for miniature gardens.
Lambs Ears (Stachys byzantina) Great in sun or partial shade. Deer resistant. Drought tolerant. Easy to grow almost anywhere. Soft leaves that blooms with a pink flower.
Jade (Crassula ovata) A very easy plant to take care of with once a week watering as needed and partial to full sunlight. Leaves will get a redish color if they recieve alot of hot sun in summer months. Do not over waters as this can cause root rot. You can easily propogate jade plants with little to no skill. A great starter plant for the novice gardener. Jade plants do best in day time temperatures of 65-75 F. (18-24 C.) during the day and 50-55 F. (10-13 C.) at night.
Purple Passion (Gynura auranti) or Velvet Plant. Keep it out of harsh, direct sunlight, though, because its leaves will scorch. Keep the soil evenly moist spring through fall. Water less in winter, keeping the plant barely moist. When watering, take care not to get water drops on the leaves which can damage them. Don't mist this plant because the hairs trap moisture that may cause the leaves to rot. Loves room temperatures 60-75°F/16-24°C.
Fittonia (Fittonia Argyoneura) Mini Red Vein or Nerve Plant. Fittonia are difficult to raise as conventional houseplants; they require very high, constant humidity (typical to a terrarium), but cannot stand stagnant conditions. Available as trailing houseplants or low-growing creepers that are perfectly fit for terrariums or bottle gardens. Plants should be kept constantly moist, with high ambient humidity. Mist frequently or grow in a tray with pebbles and water. Don't expose to full sunlight.
